XMBC backpack, Bishop Pass, August 25-27, 1989

On the schedule for a long time but no flyer; sorry about that.

This is a backpack out of the Bishop & South Lake area. We will start at South Lake and go over Bishop Pass into Dusy Basin where we'll camp*. Dusy is a beautiful basin area just above timber line and the John Muir Trail

There are numerous lakes in the area, some had plenty of fish the last time I was there. There are lots of opportunities for side hikes. One of the options will be non-technical climbs of Mt Agassiz and/or Mt Goode. There are excellent views from Mt Agassiz down into the Palisade Glacier area and along the crest, itself. This climb is only for experienced hikers with some scrambling experience.

In general, the backpack in will be tailored to the group. I believe in flexibility. This is not a climbing trip and primary objective is to enjoy. *We might push on over the pass on the first day (Friday) or spend the first night at one of the several beautiful lakes if that turns out to be the most comfortable and enjoyable thing to do. So the rating is adjustable from moderate to moderately-strenuous. Some backpacking experience is preferred but not required. If your experience and preparation is not already known to me, I will need to review this with you.

This is a 3 day trip, Friday thru Sunday. We'll start Friday morning and try to return to the cars by early afternoon on Sunday. It's highly recommended that people drive up Thursday and sleep at or near the roadhead to benefit from the one night of altitude aclimatization. Roadhead details & car-pooling assistance will be furnished to participants.

Proper equipment is required (may be shared in some cases), including rain protection, warm clothing, and boots. See an example list in the XMBC File Drawer or contact me. This is high Sierra country and we are approaching the time when snow and cold weather should not be particularly surprising. With proper preparation, this should be one of the best trips of the year.

Please call or message me for further information and/or assistance.
