San JacintoBackpack & Day Hike 11-12 February 1989
What:A backpack on snow using snowshoes (assuming there is snow) and a combined day hike into a beautiful and popular area. Day hikers will return on Saturday while the backpackers will set up camp and return on Sunday. Optional activities include a snow climb of Mt San Jacinto. Ice axe practice by special arrangement with leaders and if conditions are proper.
Where: Tamarack Valley, San Jacinto Mtns. Accessed via Palm Springs Tramway.
When: 2/11 for day hike. 2/11-12 for backpack.
Difficulty: Day hike on snow shoes is easy to moderate - no experience on snow shoes is needed. The backpack requires cold weather equipment and some experience. The optional climb of San Jacinto may be strenuous depending upon conditions. Contact a leader if you have questions or concerns.

Griffith ParkOrienteering 19 February 1989
What:An introductory orienteering event with the Los Angeles Orienteering Club. This is not an XMBC sponsored activity but is closely related to skills used in our activities. The director of the event is also an XMBC member.
Where: Griffith Park. From the Hollywood Fwy, take Vermont Ave north. It becomes Vermont Canyon Rd and enters the park. Turn right at the sign for tennis courts, go past the courts and as always look for "O" signs.
When: 2/19/89. Start times: 10 am to noon. 3 hour limit.
Cost: LAOC Member: $2.00, Non-Member: $3.00.
Bring: Long pants, walking or hiking shoes, water, compass (or rent one for 50¢), 10 Essentials, picnic lunch, camera, etc.
