ANZA-BORREGO CAR-CAMP, Fri March 2 - Sun March 4, 1990

General Information

You can arrive anytime after 2:00 PM on Friday, March 2, leave anytime up to Sunday afternoon. Friday night we'll just be setting up camp and telling stories around the campfire. Saturday, we'll have an easy dayhike to the Borrego Palm Canyon Oasis (3 miles round trip), where we'll have lunch in an oasis with hundreds of fan palm trees nestled among soaring canyon walls. Saturday evening we'll go jacuzzi in the Oh My God hot springs. [ed. Note: Oh My God was subsequently bulldozed circa 1995.] Sunday morning, we'll go on a park-sponsored guided tour of Indian pictographs with a rock art expert (2.5 miles round trip).

The camp is about a half-hour drive from the Salton Sea, which at 235 feet below sea level is the lowest (and saltiest) of all the lakes/seas in the USA. The camp is also a short walk away from the park’s Visitor Center, where you can see exhibits and a multi-media slide show on Anza-Borrego. Trip descriptions of the Borrego Palm Canyon Oasis and the pictographs hikes can be found in "Afoot and Afield in San Diego County," (Section D2, trip 1, and Section D-9, trip 3). The hot springs are described in Lindsay’s "The Anza Borrego Desert Region," p. 115. Hiking boots are not necessary for the dayhikes, but be sure to bring the Ten Essentials.

The high will be about 75 degrees, and the low will be about 50 degrees. Sometimes it rains. Water is available at the Vistor Center, and other supplies are available in the town of Borrego Springs, a short drive from camp. Dogs are allowed in camp, but not on the trails. Dogs must be on a leash or in your tent/car at all times.
