Route and Highlights
The 550 acre Cold Creek Canyon Preserve was a gift to the Nature Conservancy made by Kathleen Murphy. The Murphy Ranch will preserve a part of the Santa Monica Mountains in its wild state for all time to come. Cold Creek is a year round stream with several small falls.
Entry is by written permit only (I have a permit ) .
The outstanding feature of the trail is the variety of plant life. The hike starts at the upper entrance off of Stunt road. We will hike down the trail which starts as part of the old ranch road and then drops down to an area of dense vegetation. After a mile and a half we arrive at a large split sandstone rock that was once used as the walls of a cabin. A spring is nearby and the site of the ranch is also near. If the permit allows we can proceed down the trail and make the hike a shuttle trip. The distance is the same and we loose another 400 feet. The problem here is the gate at the bottom is locked, I do have the combination and can check to see if it has been changed since last weekend. The trail gets a little steep in spots but we had no problem last Sunday. If we can not use the lower gate we will hike to the ranch and return via the upper entrance.
The entrance to the Murphy Preserve is on Stunt Road off of Mulholland Highway. About 1 1/2 hours travel.
From north or south take the Ventura fwy. (101) to the Topanga off ramp. Go south on Topanga 1 mile to Mulholland DRIVE, then west (right) 1/2 mile to Mulholland HWY. Left here (the only way you can turn), continue west about 5.4 miles to Stunt Road. The lower gate is about 1.2 mile from Mulholland on the left. The upper gate is 3.38 miles from Mulholland on the left. I will verify the meeting place before the hike. If we can use the lower gate we will park at the bottom and shuttle to the upper gate. If not we will park at the top.
