Here’s another XMBC Outing!!!
a Day Hiketo HENNINGER FLATS in the San Gabriel Mtns
Moderate day hike. 5 miles round trip, 1400 elevation gain, all on a dirt road.
We’ll hike down into and across Eaton Canyon, and up the cypress rimmed old road (part of the historic Mt Wilson toll road ) zigzagging up steep chaparral covered slopes 2 1/2 miles to Henninger Flats where there are picnic and camp grounds. From the flats, is offered a scenic view of east San Gabriel valley.
Henninger Flats is under the administration of LA County and its principal purpose is as a tree nursery. Almost 120,000 new trees are grown here every year for the replanting of fire blackened slopes all over Southern California. There is a small museum which may be open as well as a short nature trail which may be of interest. We will plan to take a long lunch break to take advantage of these.
Saturday May 8th, 10:00 PM.
The trailhead is 2260 Pinecrest at Altadena Dr. Take Frwy 210 and exit north at Sierra Madre. You are now on Altadena Dr. Pass Washington and NY streets and turn right on Crescent Drive. Pinecrest branches from Crescent Dr. Ref: Thomas Guide book page 20 F4. There is a high fence & gate at the roadhead. Park along the street.
Lunch, water (1 quart min), camera, ten essentials and sun protection. The weather could either be chilly or hot, as well as breezy, so bring extra clothing and a wind breaker (as usual ). Good walking shoes or light boots are fine.
topo - "Mt Wilson" (7.5’).
There is a ranger station at the flats, phone # (818) 794-0675. The hike will be cancelled in case of bad weather. If unsure or if you have any questions, call a leader. You should be aware that, as in all Southern California wild areas, there could be rattlesnakes about; however, it’s unlikely we will see any. Call if you can provide a ride or if you need one. in any case, we would appreciate knowing who’s planning to come.
