Mt. Islip via Big Cienega Cut-off Xerox Mountaineering & Backpacking Club

WHEN: Sunday 30 September 1990, 11:00 AM at the trailhead

WHAT: Hike on a new trail. The trail will have been dedicated the previous day by the Sierra Club. This is billed as an "exploratory hike" because the leader has not pre-hiked it.

Sierra Club members: The hike is described in the August/September "Southern Sierran", page 11.

WHERE: Start at Deer Flat and follow the South Mt. Hawkins Truck Road to the Windy Gap Trail Junction. The project currently being completed provides a loop trip to Mt. Islip. It also provides access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the Angeles Forest. The new trail consists of two distinct segments; The first climbs from a junction with Windy Gap Trail near Big Cienega Springs around Crystal Lake bowl to the top of Islip Ridge, a distance of 1.8 miles. The second follows the crest of the ridge for 0.9 miles to a junction near the peak. After going to the peak, we will return in a clockwise loop, following the old trail.

The new trail was built by San Gabriel Mountains - Trailbuilders, which is completely independent of the Forest Service and receives no governmental support. Most of the funding has been provided by REI (San Dimas), but more funds are needed to pay for tools, mailings, etc. Contributions payable to "Sierra Club - San Gabriel Trails" may be sent to Shirley Collins, 2334 Ashland Ave, Santa Monica 90405.

DIFFICULTY: Moderate. Approx. 7 miles round trip, 2000' elevation gain and loss.

BRING:The ten essentials.

WEATHER: Rain cancels. Phone the leader, Bruce Hamilton, if in doubt.

TOPO MAP: Crystal Lake 7.5-minute USGS quad.

DIRECTIONS:From LA take the 210 to the Azusa Ave. exit (Route 39 north). It is about a 50-minute drive from the freeway to Crystal Lake Recreation Area. Follow the yellow center line past the Ranger Station to the hiker's parking area. Look for a sign marking the road to Deer Flat. Allow 100 minutes' driving time total from the El Segundo area.
