PT MUGU XEROX MOUNTAINEERING & BACKPACKING CLUB

WILDFLOWER HIKE

SATURDAY, 18 APRIL 1992

BRIEF: Moderate day hike in Pt Mugu state park. 8 miles round trip 1500 feet elevation gain. Overall time six hours including lunch break. A climb to Mugu peak will be the climax of the hike. We’ll have lunch on the peak. The peak offers a spectacular view of the ocean, the Channel Islands, and La Jolla Valley. Due to the large amounts of rain, the park should be very lush and green. Though it is still the beginning of the bloom season, I expect to find plethora of wild flowers in bloom.

TRAILHEAD: La Jolla Cyn parking lot at PCH. From the south bay take Pacific Coast Hwy west (or north) and continue past Malibu for 22 miles. You will pass Malibu Civic Center and Pepperdine University. Watch for the signs. The La Jolla Canyon trailhead is 2 miles after Sycamore Canyon. When going west on PCH you make a right turn to the parking lot; i.e, away from the ocean.

WHEN: 10:00 AM on Saturday morning 18 April 1992.

Maps: Point Mugu Topo, Point Mugu State Park.

Reference: Hike No. 2, "Hiking Trails of the Santa Monica Moutains", 3rd Ed., MIlt McAuley. This hike will reverse McAuley’s described route.

BRING: Two quarts of water per person. Light hiking boots or sneakers. Lunch. Wind shell and a sweater. Sunglasses and sun tan cream. 10 essentials are always recommended.

WARNING: Beware of poison oak - ask for assistance in identification if not sure. Also, check occasionally for ticks after walking through grassy areas, especially if wearing shorts. Toilettes are available only at the trailhead.
