Day hike to Switzer Falls April 22, 1995

Description: This is an easy dayhike from the Switzer picnic area to Switzer Falls. It is a 4 mile round trip walk downstream with 600 feet of elevation loss and gain. We will return by the same route. This trail will present some picturesque scenery as we walk along the stream to the falls, where we will stop for lunch. Commodore Switzer Trail Camp is at the top of the falls. This was a trail resort that attracted many people from all over the country. Even at that time, the only way in was by foot, horse, or pack mule. The resort is gone now, but the natural wonders of that long-ago time still remains for us to enjoy. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hiker, you will enjoy this hike through the beauty of nature. Robinson describes the trip, scenery, and interesting history of the area in hike #17 of "Trails of the Angeles, 100 Hikes in the San Gabriels".

Come and enjoy with us in an escape from the everyday pressures and tensions to adventure into a serenely wonderful world!

Note: Sections of the trail overlook nearly vertical drop-offs. Anyone particularly sensitive to heights may wish to talk to me first.

When: Sunday, April 22, 1995. Meet at the Switzer picnic area at 10:00 a.m.

Trailhead: Take the Angeles Crest Highway 10½ miles north from La Canada. About ½ mile from the junction of the Angeles Crest Highway and the Angeles Forest Highway is the turnoff to Switzer picnic area. Turn right and go about ¼ mile to the parking area outside the picnic grounds. If you can offer a ride or need a ride, call Jack. I will try to coordinate the carpooling.
