Sullivan Ridge A Moonlight Hike 9 June 1990

What: An evening hike one day past full moon. Howling will be permitted.

Where: Santa Monica Mountains, East Sullivan Ridge Road (AKA Fireroad No. 25).

When: Saturday evening 9 June 1990. Start 7:00 pm. Return 10-12:00 pm.

Statistics: Moderate; 7 miles RT; 1200 ft elev. gain (& loss).

Roadhead Instructions: Take Sunset Bl. exit west from the 405 (San Diego Fwy) - Sunset is approx. 3 miles north of IS-10 (Santa Monica Fwy). Go west on Sunset Bl. approx. 2.4 miles to Mandeville Canyon Rd. North on Mandeville barely 0.3 miles to Westridge Rd. Turn left. Follow Westridge to the end. Find parking without blocking fireroad gate, driveways, etc. Respect resident’s rights here as they could make it difficult in the future if hikers become nuisances. If it’s late when we get back, be as quiet as possible.

Map: "Topanga" & "Canoga Park" topos. Roadmaps as appropriate.

Equipment & Preparation: 10-Essentials (as usual). Water, snack, flashlight, sweater, wind-shirt/jacket. Running/tennis shoes OK; sandals, thongs, etc. are not. Camera & tripod. Dog OK here if well minded -there may be others in area.

Trip Description: About 95% of this hike will be on a well graded dirt road (excellent for running, incidentally). Near the highest point on the ridge, we’ll climb off the road to the right and pick up a faint trail to the top of a peaklet. Views should be best from here. Depending on the air & weather conditions, it’s possible to see both the ocean and a good part of the LA Basin from here. Another mile or so will take us to Muholland Dr. from which we will have good view of the San Fernando Valley to the north.

Comment on the geology of the area: On this road as well as elsewhere in this immediate area, you will see a dark gray-to-black slate material. This is the oldest rock in the Santa Monica Mountains. According to notes in McAuley’s book, it was formed about 150 million years ago when this part of California was under a shallow sea.

RSVP: If there is enough interest, we'll plan a pre-hike dinner.
