XMBC DAY HIKE: Circle X Ranch to Sandstone Peak, Pt. Mugu State Park SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 1991 RATING: Moderate - 7 miles round trip - 1500 elevation gain. Estimated time: 6 hours. It gets dark around 7:00PM. BRIEF: We'll hike in Pt Mugu state park starting from Circle X ranch. We'll be on top of Bony Ridge and climb the highest peak in the park and in the Santa Monica Mountains, namely Sandstone Peak, aliased by the Scouts as "Mt Allen", elevation 3111'. This is a part of the park where the club has never been before. In the past I have led trips starting from La Jolla Cyn (PCH) or Sierra Vista ranch in Newbury Park. This one is in the less-known part of the park "behind" Bony Ridge. GATHERING POINT DIRECTIONS: There is a ranger station with potable water,payphone,restrooms and parking lot in Circle X . It is very obvious from Yerba Buena road also called Little Sycamore Cyn (tall US flagpole) you can't help not seeing it. It is the gathering point from there we'll drive 1.7 miles north to the actual trailhead. Be at the ranch at 12:00PM. FROM THE SOUTH BAY: Go north on PCH (past Malibu) to Yerba Buena Rd. Make a right on Yerba Buena (if you make a left you'll fall to the ocean) Go on Yerba Buena road approximately 5 miles until you hit the ranger station in Circle X ranch. Park in the parking lot. The road is VERY windy so be careful. It is about 2 hours drive from the south bay. Alternatively, you can take 101 frwy west to Westlake exit. Go south on Westlake Blvd. Once you are out of the city, Westlake Blvd becomes Highway 23 and it is windy. Make a right on Mulholland. After about a mile you'll see Little Sycamore Cyn. Make a right. Little Sycamore Cyn and Yerba Buena are different names for the same road. Go on Little Sycamore Cyn until you hit Circle X Ranch Ranger Station. WHEN: Be at the ranger station at Circle X Ranch at 12:00 PM Sunday 21 April. Stragglers: The trailhead parking lot is on a dirt patch 1.7 miles from Circle X ranch towards Westlake on the right side of the road. The trailhead is across the road to the north. BRING: Two quarts of water. Snacks. Hat. Sunscreen. Lugged sole shoes. Sweater. Flash light. BEWARE OF: rattlesnakes.
